An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on Monday would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
