Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
