The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
